VCarve Pro How-To's
Adding Text
In this How-To, you’ll learn how to add and manipulate text in VCarve Pro.
Overview: Adding text in VCarve Pro is very intuitive. It’s just a matter of defining the region in which you want the text created and setting the style of text you want added.
The Process: In this example, you’ll create two different styles of text. The first will be arched text that fits the curve of a circle. The second style will be text that you stretch to fit a specific size space. On the right is a picture of what you’re going to create. |
| Step 1: |
For this example, create a new project with a material size of 10 inches by 10 inches and a thickness of 0.375 inches.
| Step 2: |
Next, create a circle to contain your text. To do this, click the circle icon and enter 9 inches for the diameter, then click ‘Create’ and then click ‘Close’.
| Step 3: |
While in ‘Selection Mode’ , select the circle you created in Step 2. Now click the ‘Draw Text Within A Vector Box’ icon . In the text area, type ‘VCarve Pro’, and set the text alignment to ‘Center’ and the margin size to ‘Normal’. Notice how VCarve Pro has automatically entered the width and height as the dimensions of the selected circle. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Close’.
| Step 4: |
Now click the ‘Edit Text Spacing and Curve’ icon , and then click the text you created in Step 3. Once you have selected the text, you will see three squares in the center. The top and bottom squares will be green; moving your mouse over either one of these, and pressing and holding down the left mouse button, will allow you to arch the text up or down, respectively. In this case, move your mouse over the top green square, and press the left mouse button down and arch the text up until it matches the radius of the circle you created in Step 2. Now move the mouse over the white center square. When you see the plus-shaped arrowed cursor , click and hold the right mouse button. This will allow you to move the text around. Move the text up so it’s near the top of the circle.
| Step 5: |
While in ‘Selection Mode’ , select the circle you created in Step 2. Now click the ‘Draw Text Within A Vector Box’ icon . In the text area, type ‘PhotoVCarve’, and set the text alignment to ‘Center’ and the margin size to ‘Normal’. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Close’.
| Step 6: |
Now click the ‘Edit Text Spacing and Curve’ icon and then click the text you created in Step 5. Once you have selected the text, you again will see 3 squares in the center. Move your mouse over the bottom green square and press the right mouse button down and arch the text down until it matches the radius of the circle you created in Step 2. Now move the mouse over the white center square. When you see the plus-shaped arrowed cursor , click and hold the right mouse button. Move the text down so it’s near the bottom of the circle.
| Step 7: |
Now you’ll create text that is forced to fit a particular size. Click the ‘Draw Text Within A Vector Box’ icon . In the text area, type ‘Vectric.com’, check the ‘Italic’ check box, and set the ‘Text Alignment’ to ‘Center’. For the ‘Bounding Box Dimensions’ enter 8.5 inches for the width and 0.75 for the height. For this text, set the ‘Margin Size’ to ‘None’; this will force the text to leave no space at the edge of the box. Now you want to force the text to fill the entire area you entered in the ‘Bounding Box Dimensions’. To do this, select ‘Stretch Characters’ in both the ‘Vertical Stretch’ and “Horizontal Stretch’ dropdown boxes. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Close’.
| Step 8: |
In ‘Selection Mode’ , select the text you created in Steps 3, 5, and 7 by holding down the ‘Shift’ key and click each text object. From the toolpaths tab select ‘Create V-Carve/Engraving Toolpath’ . Select a 90 degree 0.5 inch V-bit for the ‘V Tool’, then click ‘Calculate’.
| Step 9: |
From the 2D drawing screen, while in ‘Selection Mode’ , select the circle you created in Step 2. From the toolpaths tab select ‘Create Profile Toolpath’ . Set the ‘Cut Depth’ to 0.375 inches and select to use a 0.125 inch end mill for the ‘Tool’, then click ‘Calculate’. |
| Step 10: |
If you haven’t already, you can preview the entire job in the 3D view by clicking ‘Preview All Toolpaths’. |
