Arggh! I live about 30 minutes away from San Mateo, and didn't find out about this event until around 5:30 Sunday night! I hope you guys are planning to release a scanning module to use with Aspire!

Great job!

Good to see a number of Vectric customers at the Maker Faire, it was a lot of fun showing the Kinect hooked up to Aspire. Below are a few more pictures.

Hi Don,

As the web pages says this was an experiment within Vectric. The data capture program currently relies on some open source drivers and libraries (libfreenect from Openkinect.org). Microsoft are going to be releasing an official SDK and there are also drivers from OpenNI. We are not sure which of these routes it would be sensible to go down. After capturing the data, the manipulation is done in a development version of Aspire which again is not available.

I am are not sure about the commercial viability of this, maybe we should do a poll to find out how many Aspire owners would want to connect a Kinect to their PC to play with this. It is important for people to realize that the data from the Kinect is pretty poor, scanning children is particulalry hard, as they cover such a small area of the sensor the model is even worse than the normal output.

We had a great time at the Maker Faire and people liked the results, but we only did it for fun in our spare time, not with the aim of making a releasable product.

Brian

I do not know how dependent the existing code is on Aspire but may I suggest that the point cloud capturing engine could be set up as a standalone program and then open sourced. Let the community expand the functionality.

I know that some of the folks working on the Cupcake and Makerbot 3d printers were working on this around the beginning of the year.

Hi BoorT,

The libfreenect drivers give access to capturing the data from the Kinect and come with sample programs showing this. Our interface program just visualizes it in 3d (there are some open source programs that do that too I believe) and saves the data in a pretty raw format that we can read into our modified development version of Aspire. The 3d rendering in the capture program reuses code from Aspire and so we would not be able to open source that anyway.

The tools which massage the data into a usable format are integral to Aspire which is why I modified Aspire to do the work.

Dear Brian,

Even if the raw data is poor we could have aspire to polish isnt..?

Indeed i saw your example in lab with roughness, but also saw
your photo with al the milled examples during the show, pretty cool..
I have experience in 3d scan and know the time it takes to get
the result to aspire, just wondering how much effort it you took to get that result..

If time is less than the processing time of the 3dscanner, so with quick result and the cheap kinect (compared with a 3d scanner), and the polish options in aspire, it could be worthwhile to have such a gadget.. :)

Thanks,
Regards Ruud
