Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
Shopbots T J Christiansen is bringing a shopbot to the camp !!! while the primary focus is the Vectric software I hope to give us all a lot to be involved in,, there is a laser company asking to come but I have not received a commitment, anyone want to bring a 3d printer ? Angus?
I have a next engine and will have it out, any one else on scanning ?
registrations are above 50% and for this early this will be a good gathering

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
James,
I dearly would love to attend this time but it just isn't in the cards this year either. By the time I do make it down to your place I may hopefully know enough to understand almost half of what is being taught there.
I just completed a 2' x 3' residential driveway sign (my first one) and will post it in the Aspire gallery if I can get permission when I deliver it on Tuesday. The customer designed the layout and I made it happen for her. Hey, it has Celtic knots on it, how could I refuse her?

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
I have received some emails on why we do not video the camps for production
Camps are held for many reasons, I consider Camaraderie and collusion of ideas to be next to the subject or topic the most important, I have found that to record and edit a video along with production is counterproductive to why we hold them.. Meeting the Vectric fellows along with all the others is a face to face experience which makes all we do online with just names on a screen become very Real !!
My Shop is a commercial Architectural woodworking shop at 21000 square feet there is plenty of room and resources to have a lot going on. the main body of subject is the Vectric software yet I work to make sure we have something for all!
the Basic footprint of curriculum is on the registration,, in addition Buddy Easler who some may remember is one of the fellows who has done real well with the topo maps in 3d will present some software he works with..

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
Carve,, I still have your registration from last year sitting on my desk,, I know you had to cancel for Family reasons, I hope you will come I would like to meet you and have something for you. most will never catch this but you machine build holds the title of having the most responses and views on CNCZONE, I am sure you set out to hold no records but to me this is Admirable !!CarveOne wrote:James,

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
It darn sure does, and I have read every one of them, I am a nerd when it comes to this stuff. Unfortunatley, i am not skilled in engineering, and i have about decided to sell my machine. I cannot get my vac hold down system plummed correctly, and every time I go to lowes to get a part, it costs me 50 bucks to get outof there. I drove a brad nail thru my finger today putting my vac box together. I am about to just give up.

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
David...not to hijack Jim's tread, but...my machine has also produced moments of agony and ecstasy - well, maybe not exactly ecstasy, but you know what I mean. Sometimes, I just have to walk away from it for a while, and usually an idea comes on how to better handle the issue. The camp at Jim's usually serves to inspire me again by the possibilities, as well.crash5050 wrote:It darn sure does, and I have read every one of them, I am a nerd when it comes to this stuff. Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
You have something for me? Can't imagine what it is. I'll bet it's the year old donuts you saved for me from last year.
Tell you what, I'll reconsider coming but it's very "iffy" right now. Hold on to the registration form a little longer and I'll try real hard to get there. Will let you know something in the near future.
There are two builds on CNC zone that have gone on and on and on. I haven't looked at the stats for them in months. The big machine log may have passed 500k views by now. I'll check in a little while. The smaller machine build is over 212k views.
I just figured out what it is you have for me. Ger21 sent you a bill to present to me at the Aspire Camp for a whole new server farm to store all my photos on.

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
That is very, very good. The finishing makes all the difference, and the scale makes my eyes pop.
I need a bigger machine. And garage.
Cheers!

Great work there James. So the big question is how you did the topo.
What program did you use? Now that we have Paul Rowntree on this
thread maybe he could also explain his program a bit. Can't really say
I got to first base. Had to import an HGT file and have never heard of
this format. Any help on how to do topos would be great.

Re: Aspire at Mcgrew's Camp
I have PM'ed Mark to see what is going wrong. If anyone else is having trouble, just let me know and I can try to help out. Once you have done 1, they are all pretty easy.zlmark wrote:Great work there James. So the big question is how you did the topo.

I am working to make BigTopo directly download missing data files for the area you are working on. It works very well (and saves a lot of time & trouble compared to one-by-one manual downlaods), but exposed an interesting problem : at the edges of US areas, the hi-res SRTM-1 data files fade off and zero-out foreign elevations (like Canada!), as shown below for the Lake Ontario region. Not sure how to handle this, but it probably requires some controls to selectively block the use of SRTM-1 data.
