more commanders table pics
Lesson learned.
We sprayed the carving black. When coated with bartop epoxy it completely hid the depth of the carving.
In a sample we did with metallic paint you could see the detail to the bottom of the v carving.

Re: more commanders table pics
What type of tape did you use to mask off the Vcarving? Thanks. Mike

Re: more commanders table pics
Hey Mike,
Believe it or not it is whatever tape the government had on hand... LOL
You know... the lowest bidder.... five times the price for the same thing you could get at HOme Depot.. hehe
Sorry, just kidding. Actually it doesnt work like that as much as it did before. It is actually just 3M masking tape that our Structural Repair Shop uses when Painting Aircraft Parts.
If it was my Money I would use blue painters tape like I use on my Aluminum plaques sometimes.
We sanded it thoroughly so there was no residue left before spraying the poly (prior to the epoxy)
Thanks for your inquiry
Kelly

BLEEDING ISSUES: I now seal my vectors after they are cut with a sanding sealer. but since i have been doing that i have only used gel-stain. I am assuming you used a rattle can spray and did you have any bleeding issues?

Hey Cowboy,
We sealed the wood with a couple coats of Minwax Poly. One reason was to prevent warpage and the other to make the paint work easier with wood, so we did not have any bleeding issues. After we sprayed the paint we sanded the excess paint off and recleared to ensure we had a good consistent finish before we applied the epoxy. I have been reading some on gelstains for glazing cabinets and may be able to use that on some projects as well.
The clear and paint worked very well and we have done it on several projects including some plaques.

Re: more commanders table pics
thanks.
this is somewhat close to glazing. a painter i am not. from the movie karate kid "wipe on/wipe off". this is walnut gel-stain brushed on in sections and then wiped on on the highlights. blend it in the best you can. if i can do it then it must be simple.

Kelly,
Very nice. What V-bit did you use and how deep?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: more commanders table pics
thats not v-carving but 3-d. there were two main bits. a quarter inch end mill for the roughing tool path and a 1/8 of an inch tappered ball nose for the finish.

Thanks Mark,
The V-bit used was a Hersaf 1-1/4 dia X 90 deg.. We have a pretty good set of them ranging from 60 - 150 deg.
Using the 90 deg the V-Carving as right at 9/16" deep around the Fleur de lis at the corners of the border.
We ran it once with a 120 deg but were not satisfied with the detail at the shallow areas around the Louisiana Boots.
Fortunately since we started with the 120 first we were able to successfully follow up with the 90.

Cowboy, I really like the glazing there.Very well done!! I certainly want to give it a try. By the way, what is your technique for sanding or cleaning up your model after machining? Do you have any certain tools that you use?

Re: more commanders table pics
still a rookie but hopefully getting better each day. i found on the forum that people use a sanding mop, fine grit. i got mine from rockler but there are many to choose from. after that a pic and small needle nose pliers and i get most of it done.

i was checking out the local hardware store for a black metallic. although these paints claim to be black they are more of a charcoal grey. does that sound right.

Hey Cowboy,
Thats exactly right sir.. Thats actually what we were initally looking for. Since we had the legs fabricated from A10 gatlin gun barrells, we were looking for some type of gun metal grey and ran across the Rustoleum Black night Metallic. It did just what we wanted and after an experiment we decided it looked great in the carving.
Vic,
Thank you very much!!
