wall hung jewelry cabinet with inlay

Post by endgrainguy »

This piece is our big entry for a local gallery show featuring the work of two woodworker/blacksmith collaborations. The cabinet has wrought iron twig pulls on doors and drawer from Justin Morrell of Colrain, MA. The inlay is all done vinlay style, in ebony, maple burl, and holly. Cherry cabinet, rubbed tung oil varnish finish.

That is some SERIOUS craftmanship! The cabinetry is perfect, the inlay is well executed to say the least.

The inlay is about 13" x 19" . It's all wood --the snow and snowflakes are holly, all done in a single layer, as was the burl. Well, actually the burl was done in a few pieces, because I didn't have a big enough burl for whole door, and I wanted to avoid a glueline in the middle of a burl segment. The pulls are glued into the door via 1/8" standoffs that are welded to the pull. If you look at the doors straight on they disappear into the inlay, but with any parallax they're subtley visible. As seen in the second photo the double doors are split along a curved treeline, and one door tucks behing the other via a rabbet, with the outer door closing by embedded rare earth magnets to hold both doors shut. Here's a detail shot showing a section about nine inches wide.

That's incredible!

I haven't tried inlays yet, but I'm thinking I should start moving that direction.. Very inspiring!
