Windy Ridge

Post by T.R.MacMunn »

This is made from an old hand-hewn Western Red Cedar beam. The letters are Corafoam 15 .
The pockets for the rope , letters & the pictorial were all done with a .500" ballnose with about a 16% stepover, because I wanted a "canvas" texture for the pictiorial. It was only lightly sanded between coats of primer.
The letters were prismed with a 120* bit & then I used a #2 or a #3 gouge ( I'm not sure which it is) to do the texture ( about 10 minutes work with the chisel). 23k gold.
There's no finish on the face of the sign. It's cedar & will be fine for another 30 years or more.
Frank ( the horse) was painted by Donna, a former employee who now owns her own shop down the road. It's known as "friendly competition" ....... we work together on a lot of projects . Para & Porter Acrishield house paints.

BTW, about $1000, including posts & my supervision of the installation.
I'm not sure if the name comes from the proximity to Lake Ontario or if Frank has a flatulence problem

Awesome.

I love the detailed description as to how it was done.

Love the pictures on your signs and how you hilight them.

Hmmmm - hiring out the stuff I cannot do! I wonder if I can find a local artist/painter to do some of that.

Thank you for sharing the pricing. There is no better way to figure out how to price a job than to see examples from the professionals.

Great job TR - I just love it.

Thanks everyone.
Leo just brought up a point of interest. I'm lucky in that I have someone with whom I can exchange work, but before that I had to hire out my pictorials. I do a lot of them myself, especially if it's a landscape, but Donna is one of the most talented commercial artists I've ever met so I take advantage of her skills whenever I can. In return, I do a lot of the "dirty" stuff for her . Each of us is able to give our customers a better product when both of us are involved with a job.
In most places you can find someone who loves to paint but doesn't much because paintings are a hard sell. Many won't want to paint what you need because it's not "their creation", but there are some really talented people who will paint what's asked, especially if you provide the reference & tell them to use a bit of artistic license on it.
What they really enjoy is doing something they know they'll get paid for. Getting them to estimate how long it will take is difficult ..... suggest a figure you can live with for the first few until you get comfortable with each other. After that, anywhere between 2X & 3X the minimum wage is generally fair for everyone.

Donna is given a LOT of freedom on her work for me. I learned a long time ago to just point out what was critical & then turn her loose. And, let the artist sign the pictorial ...... then it becomes something you can both be proud of.

Beautiful work and collaboration! .. I am working on a sign with a very similar layout. I have been struggling with how I was going to carve the foam to look like rope. Well duh, just use rope. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.
