Anouther Mayan Calendar

Post by Mogal »

Well? Don't we all have to make one? LOL :D

I'm pretty happy with the outcome, looks really sharp!
23" diameter 3/4" thick MDF. Cut with 1/4"-60 deg vbit. About 2-3/4 hours.
I could make it alot faster now that I have some harmonic balancers installed.
Max speed was only 60ipm before the balancers, now can achieve 160ipm!
I used double sided tape insted of clamps due to table size as I couldn't get any clamps in!
As the wood was cut, it warped on me causing some cuts to be a little deeper.
Hard to tell to the untrained eye tho

Thanks for looking!
Chris

Very nice work! I can't open the Mayan files from the CNC website... would you be willing to share it for VcarvePro?

Nicely done. Is that the same vector file I see floating around the cnc sites?

I set my DOC to be 0.025"
If I had to do it again, I think I would go about 0.040"
(At least at this diameter)

Very nice indeed.

How did you color it? Spray the whole thing then sand the surface?

My first thought was no, we don't all need to make one. Then I looked at yours and thought, crap I think I need to make one of these now.

Thats exactly what I did.

I used some water based paints that I used for some model building.
I was worried that the waterbase colors would seep through the MDF,
but it didn't at all. I blended some metallic flakes with the gloss black I used,
and it looks REALLY nice with the glitter in the shadows.

LOL glad I could help out with the selection of your next project!! ;o)

Is it clear coated over the sanded parts then?

No, as it sits right now there is no clearcoat on it.
I'm debating if it going to be further painted... (but I doubt it)
