Granite memorials cnc-engraving, VCarve Pro
Hello VCarve users,
I am carving granite tombstones with my self made cnc for 4 months now. I will add a link to my webpage, where you can see pictures from some of the work done using VCarve Pro.

Any problems with the rock dust and bearings in the router or spindle?

No problems with dust, because heavy watercooling is used, better picture added.GaryR6 wrote:Any problems with the rock dust and bearings in the router or spindle?

What are the bits you are using? I etch granite but I have not found good bits for carving yet. Looking at your website, I like the work that you are doing.
Also if possible feeds and speeds?

I use diamond bits, 90 and 20 degrees, also ball end. Mostly 8mm shank, much smaller will not hold with so hard stones I carve. We sell mostly Russian Karelia (Gabbro Diabase), which is one of the best quality and also hardest stones in the world. Some bits I use are also from sintered diamond. One small tool maker makes those for me as special order. I am very satisfied with the durability. Some bits hold 10 monuments. When material ise softer, then times more. G684 China black granite they cut like bread.kilrabit wrote:What are the bits you are using? I etch granite but I have not found good bits for carving yet. I have only 1.8KW spindel. Feed for very hard stone is about 8mm/sek 15 000rpm. G684 or marble you can double the feed.

Is there a website to order the diamond engravers? How deep are you carving?

There is no website for those, possible is, that I order next time more and can ship, when someone wants. The depth is how VCarve calculates it. For big letters (8-10cm height) it can be 10 mm.copperhead4321 wrote:Is there a website to order the diamond engravers? How deep are you carving?

Looked at your website. Very nice work, especially on a home built machine.

I talked with that small diamond tools producer, who makes those very durable routerbits for me by special order. As he is not very familiar with webpages, I will help him to create a simple page where you can order the bits and pay with paypal. He will build some stock now for the 3 types of bits I use in my gravestone shop, for the start with 8mm shank. Meanwhile I will work with that webpage to add there valuable information from my experience. I will make some video/pic material and write about feeds, speeds, different type of stones, software tips etc.copperhead4321 wrote:Is there a website to order the diamond engravers? Those bits cost between 25-35 USD/pcs, and with one I can carve normally at least 10 headstones of hard granite, mostly they hold even more. For example I use the same 20 degree sintered bit already 3 weeks at the moment, and its still ok, I have done 8 headstones and 13 smaller granite plates with that already. So the tool cost is only couple $ for one tombstone. I dont think it can be better with any other tool for hard granite.

I made a videoclip today from that 20 degree sintered bit carving Indian Galaxy Granite.
The link is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A8hQikuerg
And the finished plate pic attached. Machining time was about 35 minutes. Size of that plate is 25x46cm

I think the 8mm shank could be a problem for some. 1/4" or 7.35mm is the norm on this side of the world unless you have an ER collet.Granito EE wrote:I talked with that small diamond tools producer, who makes those very durable routerbits for me by special order. Any more comments about the shank size case from anyone? I personally don't think, it is a big issue, because most of the cnc supply stores sell those.Wolffie wrote:I think the 8mm shank could be a problem for some. 1/4" or 7.35mm is the norm on this side of the world unless you have an ER collet.Granito EE wrote:I talked with that small diamond tools producer, who makes those very durable routerbits for me by special order.
