how to:"Apply a dark stain or paint and wipe the excess off"

Post by cor »

Hello all,

I would like to know the correct technique for "Apply a dark stain or paint and wipe the excess off the surface" as explained in the text below to get the nice finish as in the thread which is linked below. (copied from the vectic main page). And what kind of paint to use.
Wood & MDF
Varnish or lacquer the top surface of absorbent material
Carve through the sealed top surface
Apply a dark stain or paint and wipe the excess off the surface
Leaving dark grooves that contrast with the material surface and bring the design to ‘life’.
Alternatively,
carve the design detail directly into the wood / mdf
Paint / spray the complete job with the contrasting dark colour
Use a sanding machine to clean off the top surface leaving the grooves dark.
Like in this thread http://www.vectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6576, it's very nicely done.

Another question is; what is "lithopanes", someone has the Dutch and or German word for it?

many thanks,
Cor

Most people use a solid surface material such as Corian

one i just did ( photocarve) was for a customer, so i cant show it.
but the basic stuff is get a blank, i used a 12" x 12" pine board that did not have strong grain.
shellac it.
while it's drying i processed the picture, by doing the cut out the unimportant stuff as in the training videos.
saved as bmp
import into photocarve, cut with a angle of 135, .045 deep, 60 degree vbit.
save the file.
clamp the blank in place, very carefully zero it to surface.
cut.
recut ( helps clear out the fuzzys for me )
wire brush
shellac.
after the shellac is dried i cover the cut part with a dark brown gel stain with a rag ( old sock this time )
wipe perpendicular to the vcarve marks to wipe off.
let dry overnight
sand lightly till it looks right, wire brushing off the dust every once in a while( you want the tops back to the pine color, but the grooves still dark)
shellac.
hand it to whoever
thats the way dan taught me to do it... works

Hi sawmiller
That sounds like it may be me except for the wire brush. Doesn’t that damage the surface?

yup, it's you.
the wire brush is a added technique to get rid of the fuzzys.
you said you do mostly veneer, if i remember right. i do mostly whole wood, the scratches don't hurt esp since i do them in the direction of the grooves, and brush, not scrub.

@Rcnewcomb : thanks, never heard of that stuff before.... I will try to get some of this material somewhere.

@sawmiller:
-Thanks you for your explanation, I am dutch and not familiar with the technical details/terms yet. What is "shellac", a quick google learned me it has something to do with waxing. But can you go deeper into this technique? and how to do this exactly with the "old sock" :-)

-I like the idea of the "recut" will try this with me next work.

many thanks,
Cor

shellac is a clear type finish, like varnish, or polyelthane, but dries much faster due to it's alcohol carrying base.
old sock refers to a discarded piece of clothing :D i used it to apply the finish

sawmiller: Last weeks I tried to get some chellak, but it is quite hard to get it here, seems it is nowadays only used for restauration.

Next week I will look further, maybe I can oreder some via the internet.

Is there a good substitute for shellac?

thanks,
Cor

you can use any clear finish,
shellac just has the advantage of speed of drying and it is good for either a water based or oil finish

ahhhhh, that was the missing link..... "coating" it. :-)

Today finally some time to experiment.
Attached the final result, I am quite happy. Still some more experimenting to do , but I am in the right direction now.
