Latest try at a litho. Used some scrap wood for a frame. Wife likes it so that's all that counts
Now I have to come up with something for back lighting. I don't like the light box a bought a few months ago as the led's around the frame are too directional.

here is a source for led panels
LB3 series LED Light Bar
Light Bar with 6 High Flux 60 Degree LEDs 10~14.5 VDC Operation
Bars are 4.32 inch long and include 5 inch long interconnect jumper and adhesive backed plastic mounting track
Select Cool White, Warm White, Blue, Green, Red or Amber LED
$ 4.95
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/ ... oduct=BARS
All you need is a power supply and connector and you are good to go. The advantage is that you can make them any size by adding more strips
If you are not up to the challenge fo making a frame with LEDs, there is an option that is a bit pricier.
EL panels! Cool stuff, but a bit more expensive.

ArtistInFla thanks for the links, think I will try the led bar you listed first.
Going to give the company that sells the EL sheets a call tomorrow to see what the price is, might be worth it for the "special" gifts for the family members.

Have you tried some sort of opaque panel to diffuse the source lighting? Just a thought since I haven't tried this myself.

I have tried some very thin plastic sheet I had laying around, but all it did was block more of the overall light, made the whole picture darker and you cold still tell where each led was, lighting was still very uneven.
Next time I'm at the local art and craft store will see if I can find something that might work.

George, Great Job on the litho, looks like you have it down pat now. Please keep use informed on the El sheet . I tried to find price but couldn't . This would be great material if it works, even better if one can make a battery pack to run it .
ArtistInFla, thanks for the find looks promising going to have to get some to try it

lovebugjunkie,
I was thinking along the lines of the panels that are use in fluorescent light fixtures. I know that with some of the cheaper ones you can easily see the tubes but with better ones you can't.

I tried contacting beingseen but no one ever answers the phone, sent them email and it was answered giving very little to no information requested in my email but ask that I call back, I did and got their voice mail again. Marked them off my list.
Talked with Mike at e-light and he is sending me some information.

That is a nice looking frame, but if I’m reading the dimensions correctly, a little bigger than what I am looking for, and then there is the price for 100 of them.
I like the idea of the electroluminesent stuff and making my frames out of cheap wood (ie. Scraps).
Wife wants the back of the frames to be as thin as possible so that is limiting my options. She also likes the idea of the e-light material but she also saw it may take a large power inverter we saw on their site and she has already nixed that idea. A wall type power supply or the type you see with notebooks she is ok with but anything larger I’m not going to be able to sell her on it.
I am going to order some material from e-light to see how it works. Even if it is a little on the high side (depending on how much ) I think that will suit my needs better than what I have ran across so far for those “special” projects for family members.

The power supply shown isn't required. As long as you are withing specs for voltage and current requirements, you could use any power supply.

Placed an order today for some material from
E-Lite Technologies. Will post more info when I see how it works out.
Here is some info that I received about the power requirements.
Quote:
The lamps operate with a voltage as high as 280vac at a frequency of 650 hertz so that is where our inverter comes into play. Our smaller inverters for powering lamps up to 250 sq” have a 12 volt DC input which can be derived from either batteries or a source like a wall transformer. In a nutshell coming from the wall to the lamp looks like this, 120vac 60HZ -to- 12vdc -to- 250vac 650hz. If batteries are chosen you will need 8 in series to add up to the 12vdc that our input needs to convert and drive the lamps. 8 AA batteries will get you about 1-2 hours of continuous light on a 6”x6” panel so I highly recommend the wall transformer.
