complex inlay with engraving

Post by endgrainguy »

Commission in process, --here's the top to a box I'm making. Materials are thick veneers of : bubinga, arraracanga, ebony, maple, west indian satinwood, baliwood, holly and ivory. Many hours into this top, but I learned a lot, and feel like I can take on complicated inlays with confidence. Both conventional and Vinlay techniques used. Overall size is about 8" x 11", so the celtic banding in the oval is made from lines about 1/32" wide. Banding was based on a free celtic design font I found on the web --easily then converted into the oval configuration by shaping text to curve tool.

That is amazing work! Thanks so much for sharing.

A couple of questions
1. What parts were V-inlay versus conventional inlay?
2. For the v-inlay portions, how do you remove the waste? This has always been the part that messes up my attempts, as the inlay chips out when I attempt it. I've tried machining it on my cnc - don't have a drum sander or radial saw.

Stars, and both sets of knotwork are Vinlay. I sand off waste with a widebelt sander, 60 grit. If area is small I just handplane, scrape, and orbital sand, but on this piece it was wide belt. Not as severe as one might think, as i resaw the material for male Vinlay at .09 and glue to backer board and resaw layer after routing, so not much to sand off. For the oval banding I glued up a .09 thick oval about 3/4" wide of ebony in segments, and left some of the backer board, pine, when i resawed after routing. Its very cool when i sand down to the inlays , still protruding some, and I can peel off the bulk of the backing layer like some sort of exotic, very dry fruit.
