Turning a Sow's Ear Into a Silk Purse

Post by TReischl »

A few weeks ago I was cutting a double sided job. The intent was to make an artsy looking bowl.

The machine did the roughing and finishing just fine on the first side. Flipped it over and things went well with the roughing.

Then, I noticed that the finishing tool was leaving humongous steps. Hmmmm. Of course, I immediately thought I had not smoothed the model enough. After some detective work, it turned out that the turnbuckle that provides adjust for spring tension on the rack and pinion had backed off, allowing the pinion to skip whenever.

So, there I was, with about 2 hours of cutting time and a chunk of thick maple invested. Instead of tossing it out, I let it sit on my bench as a reminder to do machine maintenance.

Then, I took a real good look at it and went to work "fixing" it. Here is the result:

My better half likes this bowl way better than the original design. So, it has a few more coats of finish to go and it will be a keeper.

Absolutely a keeper! I believe that is called "serendipity"...

I love that bowl! Don't know how much the original design was deviated from, but - wow! This one is beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful, Tim...err Ted :D . And thanks for the tip about the springs...I think that may apply to my machine as well.
