For a long time we have had the desire to have a room at Vectric that staff can use to create their own projects using CNC and related technologies. This has many benefits in terms of understanding practical use of the software but is mainly driven by the fact we are genuinely passionate about CNC and want to make stuff...
With this in mind Brian started collecting machinery and tools and earlier this year we had part of the downstairs in the office walled off to house the new “Vectric Labs Maker Room”. This is now in a state where we can actually begin to make a few things and so once a week we have been starting to stay late and take some tentative steps to use the fantastic resource.
Our plan with this Vectric Labs site (linked to Facebook) is to start to sporadically blog about what we’re making and also any experiments with software related activity (such as the Kinect hack).
Currently we have a number of projects in the early stages such as our meeting room table, a carving bench and various other decorative items but are initially just getting familiar with the tools and bringing the staff who have not run a CNC up to speed on their operation.
Myself and our new recruit Rebecca have so far carved a simple dished rose, a prism shaped G and VCarved the Vectric logo – which you can see in the images. The plan with the G is to finish it up and then start to experiment with some gold-leaf (or maybe silver-leaf while we practice!). All these projects were pretty straightforward but we’re useful in understanding the process for part hold-down and machine setup. I am sure there will be a few more weeks of simple stuff like this before we start to graduate to work on some of our more in-depth projects, but so far so good!
