Inlayed Guitar Pick Box

Welcome to the Labs sessions! We love to make and share projects with our community and enjoy nothing more than providing you with FREE monthly CNC projects that you can download and cut for yourself!

Each project comes with its own video for you to watch telling the story of what we’re making from start to finish. It includes technical software footage, machining each part in the Labs and finishing the project, and as an added bonus, we throw in a few tips based on our experience! We would love to see what you turned this project into so download the files from your V&CO account then share what you’ve made on the Vectric Forum.

This project stems from the necessity of a simple solution to prevent David’s guitar picks from ending up in the washing machine and an eagerness to spin up the VCarve inlay strategy (available in VCarve Pro and Aspire) to find out if it really is that simple to achieve the flawless results achieved by our Vectric community members.

With this being the first ever time that David has stepped beyond the theory of v-inlays, you can expect a very inclusive walk through as we ‘rough out’ the initial design stage together and highlight the value of taking the time to understand the strategy specific jargon with a proof of concept before jumping in at the deep end.

The guitar pick box is an elegant solution to all guitarists nemeses, the phantom pick thief ; though with this being a simple and instantly recognisable design, utilising easily obtainable materials and fixings, you can quickly adapt this to suit your unique display or storage requirements. With a few simple edits it could be a beautiful engagement ring box to accompany that special question insuring the right answer to get you to that wedding day!

The automated VCarve inlay tool does the heavy lifting, freeing you from number crunching and open to your creative instincts. This should strike a chord for those of you who have always wanted to try your hand at inlays but haven’t had the confidence to do so.

Aside from the party piece on the lid, this project is a very practical guide to utilising a wide range of tool geometries and standard 2D pockets and profiles to achieve a refined finish and ergonomic opening mechanism. With this being agnostic to your subjective choice of contrasting materials, you too can create your own unique inlaid pick box today!

So when it comes to inlays don’t fret, tune in with David and please do share your creations with us on the Vectric Forum or tag us on our socials.

Happy Making!
