Welcome to the Labs sessions! We love to make and share projects with our community and enjoy nothing more than providing you with FREE monthly CNC projects that you can download and cut for yourself!
Each project comes with its own video for you to watch telling the story of what we’re making from start to finish. It includes technical software footage, machining each part in the Labs and finishing the project, and as an added bonus, we throw in a few tips based on our experience! We would love to see what you turned this project into so download the files from your V&CO account then share what you’ve made on the Vectric Forum.
In our cutting edge world of EasyCreate and EasyCarve; There still remains a place for donning the leather apron and magnifying glasses to practice the artisanal crafts of days gone by.
One thing which will never change (maybe) will be the requirement for implements to cook your meals without burning your hands to pieces. Many of these utensils are made from soulless silicon and plastics which don’t feel great and require frequent replacement in our throw away society.
The art of crafting meals is something that a lot of people take great pride in and they use this time as a form of free therapy, so in order support this, they spend a lot of time and money decking their kitchens out with ‘nice’ cookware and utensils.
These are tools to achieve an end but their performance and suitability are make and break for how calm you remain under pressure. Have you ever been in the situation where your pasta is long past ‘Al Dente’ and you’re half way out of the oven with a tray in one hand, scrambling around to find the server? Think "It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife," and you get the idea.
In this month’s project, we take a look at how we can craft ergonomically pleasing utensils with our traditional model crafting skills using the full suite of tools available in Aspire.
Specifically we are going to be focusing on two of the lesser talked about features of the modelling world, with the ‘Merge Low’ combine mode and the ‘offset visible model’ tool, demonstrating how quickly and easily we can form more complex contours in combination with the intuitive ‘create shape’ tools within the software.
In doing this we will produce a set which makes a truly universal gift that can also be very personal with the import many people place on cooking to facilitate quality time with the family. For me, it means that I can stir my Egg and Beans and that’s okay because if you just need Tools to do a job, you can much more efficiently produce flat 2D utensils using profile and pocket toolpaths. If you’re after something a bit more refined then the time taken over crafting these is more than worth it to match the love and care the recipient puts into cooking for their family and friends.
So let’s get the boil rolling and start making!
Remember:
These dimensions are completely variable, providing you re-calculate your toolpathing after any
Changes, you can alter these to accommodate whatever material you have available to you. Just make sure again that all materials are food safe.
