Raven Book End

Welcome to the Labs sessions with Nav! We love to make and share projects with our community and enjoy nothing more than providing you with FREE monthly CNC projects that you can download and cut for yourself!

Each project comes with its own video for you to watch telling the story of what we’re making from start to finish. It includes technical software footage, machining each part in the Labs and finishing the project, and as an added bonus, we throw in a few tips based on our experience! We would love to see what you turned this project into so download the files from your V&CO account then share what you’ve made on the Vectric Forum.

World Book Day is just around the corner, and there’s no better way to celebrate your love of reading than with a beautifully crafted book end.

In this month’s project, Nav guides you step-by-step through the creation of the Raven Book End — a striking and practical design that keeps your books neatly supported while making a bold visual statement. Along the way, Nav demonstrates how to use the slicing tool to divide a 3D model into three separate sections, allowing you to work efficiently with material that is thinner than the original model thickness. He also shows how to create a clear and organised layout using sheets, making it easy to manage the various materials involved.

You’ll learn how to combine both 2D and 3D toolpath strategies for efficient machining, as well as a selection of finishing techniques that truly bring the project to life. The design features upcycled Corian off-cuts paired with two contrasting wood species, creating a distinctive layered effect, enhanced with subtle lighting and dry-brushing for added character and depth.

This project is also fully customisable. Simply swap out the raven for a design of your choice — perhaps an apple for the bookworm in your family, a 3D heart for a book-loving Valentine, or something darker to embrace spooky Halloween vibes. With easy-to-use slicing techniques, you’re never limited by material thickness, giving you complete creative freedom.

We’d love to see what you create. Try the project for yourself and share your results on the Vectric Forum or tag us on social media.

Happy making!
