Hi, I'm Dave. After spending 25 rewarding years in sales, I took a step back for health reasons and embarked on a new journey of creativity and innovation. In 2017/18, I bought a 3D printer and delved into the world of CAD, designing my own unique creations. This passion for design and craftsmanship led me to build a Workbee CNC from a kit and explore the realm of CAM.
A few years down the line, I upgraded to a custom CNC and expanded my arsenal of machines. Today, I proudly operate a compact yet efficient garage workshop where I bring my designs to life. Under the name "GoodWood," I enjoy making and selling my handcrafted creations. This new venture has kept me engaged, inspired, and excited about the endless possibilities of what I can create next.

Forum contributor Dave Hebson has crafted a stunning minimalist chess set using Vectric Aspire and a double-sided CNC machining process to ensure perfect symmetry and surface consistency across every piece.
Machined from beautiful cherry wood, this elegant design combines clean geometry with subtle detail, resulting in a modern take on a timeless classic.
Most of the pieces were modelled using Aspire’s Vector Turning Tool, allowing for smooth, flowing forms that capture the essence of traditional chess shapes. The knight’s distinctive head was sculpted with precision using the 2-Rail Sweep feature — a clever technique that defines the horse’s contours with grace and balance.
To achieve flawless results, Dave refined each toolpath with boundary vectors, and used a ball nose (BN) cutter for the final profile cuts, ensuring crisp edges and preventing chipping.
Whether you’re a CNC hobbyist or a seasoned Aspire user, this project is a brilliant showcase of creative design, precise machining, and smart toolpath strategy.
