Aaron Leedham – Elephant Lamp

Aaron Leedham of Crafty & Co created this project as a homage to Fratelli Manelli. The elephant lamp is a contemporary twist inspired by Aarons love for the travertine animal lamps made by Manelli in the 1970’s. Aaron used his Vectric software to create this playful yet simplistic project that can be machined in no time and would be perfect for any kids room.

The project itself is made from birch plywood and valchromat. The Birch plywood sheet consists of two mirrored parts where you are essentially cutting the inner parts of the lamp; a channel for the chrome tube and lighting cable, drill holes for dowels to marry to two parts together and a profile cutout to cut the two shapes out.

The valcromat sheet has the parts for you to cut out in a different material that will be glued to either side of the plywood parts to create a sandwich effect based on the color of the material, whether that’s valcromat, just like Aaron used, or any material you like!

The shade Aaron used is 30cm in diameter, where he used a 5cm chrome extension tube and a chrome E27 lamp holder, these are connected to the base and each other using 10mm threaded tube for lamp fittings.

The cable is 3 core (because the lamp holder is metal/ceramic and needs to be earthed) woven linen with an inline 240v switch.
